The Henderson to Lippo Centre: A look at Hong Kong beautiful architectural icons
All about the mesmerizing Hong Kong architectural icons
Hong Kong has the world's largest collection of high-rise buildings, many of which have been designed by world-renowned architects.
While exploring Hong Kong's core business district, one can witness world’s beautiful architectural icons that are standing tall in the heart of city with all their glory.
It also includes The Henderson, a nature-inspired tower designed by Zaha Hadid Architects that is scheduled to open in 2023. Read more about them below:
HSBC Headquarters Building (1985)
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation launched an international design competition in 1979 for its ultra-ambitious new Central headquarters. By constructing "the best bank building in the world," the bank hoped to send a strong message of confidence to the city. Foster + Partners, led by architect Sir Norman Foster, won the competition with an unconventional plan to construct a modular, prefabricated steel structure with three individual towers connected by steel bridges and a 10-story atrium.
Lippo Centre (1988)
The late Paul Rudolph, a leading American architect known for his modernist style, designed the double-office tower, which was originally known as the Bond Center. This pair of hexagonal high-rises is highly reflective and asymmetrical, measuring 48 and 44 stories, respectively.
Bank of China Tower (1990)
The Bank of China Tower is located between Chater Garden and the Peak Tram station (a funicular rail that has been chugging up to The Peak mountain since 1888). (BOC Tower). Just months before unveiling this one-of-a-kind structure in Hong Kong, renowned architect IM Pei completed work on the Louvre Pyramid in Paris and the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
Two International Finance Centre (2003)
On a clear day, you can see all the way across Hong Kong from the stratospheric offices in Two International Finance Center (2IFC), which Henderson Land, a leading Hong Kong property development group, helped develop. Directly below, the Star Ferry careens across the harbour, making the tiny lanes of Central appear even more insignificant. The new M+ Museum of Visual Arts and the grand Palace Museum stand proud in the West Kowloon Art District to the northwest, while the Eight Mountains of Kowloon loom in the distance.
The Henderson (2023)
In keeping with Hong Kong's reputation for groundbreaking architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) will unveil The Henderson, the firm's first commercial tower in the city, next year. The 36-story office tower, which is set to open on Murray Road in the heart of Central, will be connected to key MTR stations, including Central, Admiralty, and Airport Express. It will also be surrounded by major landmarks and parks such as Hong Kong Park, Chater Garden, Lambeth Walk Park, the Flagstaff Museum of Teaware, the neoclassical Court of Final Appeal building, and the soaring Bank of China.
